NAV - Mission

NAV Portugal has the primary mission of providing Air Traffic Services in the Flight Information Regions (FIRs) under Portuguese responsibility – Lisbon and Santa Maria, ensuring the fulfillment of the National and International regulation in the best Safety conditions, optimizing Skills and enhancing efficiency with environmental concerns in mind.

Our company performs its activity in the Mainland and in the Azores and Madeira Autonomic Regions. The company's Headquarters, the Lisbon Air Traffic Control Centre, and the Training Centre are located by the Lisbon Airport. The Ocean Control Centre is located in the Azores Autonomic Region, namely in the island of Santa Maria.

Besides these two major Centres, NAV Portugal also has other infrastructures with Air Traffic Services operating in the Airport Control Towers of Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Funchal, Porto Santo, Santa Maria, Ponta Delgada, Horta, Flores and in the Cascais Aerodrome. In order to fully accomplish its Air Traffic Control mission, NAV Portugal has a wide set of equipments and technical facilities (radar stations, radio help, and communications) in several locations of the Mainland and Autonomic Regions.
Air space blocks
The Oceanic Air Traffic Management System on Santa Maria and the phased entry into service of a new generation of air traffic management systems in Lisbon have been of crucial importance in keeping NAV Portugal in the forefront of air navigation service providers.

There are defined in order to:

  • Allow effective air traffic flow
  • Take into consideration the human and financial resources of the different regional control centres
  • Maximize the overall efficiency of European air space
  • Minimize the air traffic transfer and coordination costs between the different regional control centres
  • Implement more direct routes in the future RESIV
